Report on Spending of New Grove Trust Grant Funding to Caldicot and District U3A Short Mat Bowls Group

The Short Mat Bowls Group came into existence in February 2013, using equipment of one mat, one set of fenders and 2 sets of bowls borrowed from Caldicot Scouts. Initially the group had 12 members, which had grown to 21 members by the middle of March.

An additional mat and set of fenders was borrowed from Monmouthshire Short Mat Bowls Association, to help reduce the number of members who were turning up, but unable to play immediately.

In order to obtain our own equipment AND cater for future increase in membership the Group applied, via Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations, to Sport Wales Community Chest and New Grove Trust for grants of £1110 and £1075 respectively. The Community Chest grant application was approved on 1st May 2013 and the New Grove Trust grant application approved on 17th May 2013.

The funding from Community Chest was used to purchase a mat and other equipment. When the mat was used it was found to be very fast, so needed an underfelt. With the approval of New Grove Trust, this was purchased using part of the New Grove Trust grant funding, the remainder being used to purchase a second mat for the Group. The rest of the equipment itemised on the Grant Application has been either made by group members or purchased out of Group weekly subscriptions.

The membership now stands at 38, with an average of 22 members turning up for each playing session. The borrowed mat and fenders have been returned to Monmouthshire Short Mat Bowls Association, but we still use the mat and equipment borrowed from the Scouts.
