Caldicot U3A Bowls Club

The Short Mat Bowls Group started in February 2013 using equipment belonging to Caldicot Scout Group. An additional mat and set of fenders was borrowed from Monmouthshire Short Mat Bowling Association, which enabled more players to participate simultaneously.

The Group was awarded grants by Sport Wales Community Chest and New Grove Trust in May 2013 which allowed for the purchase of two sets of mats and ancillary equipment, enabling the Group to return the borrowed equipment to the Monmouthshire Association.

When rolled up for storage, the mats are heavy to lift and move by hand, and our members struggled to move and store the mats correctly.

We investigated the possibility of purchasing a mat handling and storage unit. Our equipment storage space within the Scout Hall is limited, but we eventually found a unit which would suit our needs.

We approached Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations for guidance on sources of funding to enable us to purchase a handling unit, and they suggested applying to New Grove Trust, which we did on 15th July 2014.

The grant application for £500 was approved on 19th August, and the unit has been purchased and is now in operation at the Scout Hall, Caldicot.
