Tintern Festival Association

The trust gave the festival committee a grant toward their Michaelmas Festival 0n the 24-26th September. Michalemas was widely celebrated in medieval times to mark the end of the harvest season with an annual trading fayre and making merry with festive song and dance. The association, particularly bearing in mind the historical context of Tintern to those times, felt that this occasion should be celebrated for the benefit of the local community and visitors alike.

This year there was a particular focus on the symbol of the ‘Green Man’ used in medieval times for celebrating the bond with nature. Awareness of green environmental issues that affect people locally was encouraged throughout the festival.

It is estimated that 500 people attended the festival over the weekend and hopefully it helped to helped to bring the community together and to encourage visitors to come back to the village.
